The Bible tells us, “Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they toil not, neither do they spin.”

This is a powerful message. It doesn’t matter what we do, who we are, or how hard we try—it’s all out of our control. We can’t control when the sun rises and sets, what today or tomorrow will hold, or what cards life deals us.

So what does this mean for believers?

It means that while we should always make an effort do good, be good, and love others, those things shouldn’t be dictated by what happens today or tomorrow.

Matthew gives us an excellent example of how this is put in action by observing God’s created nature. Even the flowers in a filed don’t toil away.

But what does this mean exactly?

We know that flowers, or lilies, don’t have feelings, can’t feel hurt or pain, disappointment, or let down, like we can.

How does considering the lilies help us grow as Christians?

In practical terms, it shows us that God is in control of everything, even things as simple as flowers in a field. He holds all of these things, and more, in His hands. He controls what tomorrow brings and knows all.

It is important to give praise to God and learn how to trust Him; just as the lilies do.

The heavens declare the glory of God,

and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.

Day to day pours out speech,

and night to night reveals knowledge.

Ps. 19:1-2 ESV

This might seem like an overly simplistic view of life, especially in times of trial. But in truth, knowing this, believing it, and putting it in to practice is the essence of what Christ teaches his disciples, and in turn us, through the gospels.

Observing Nature and Creation Strengthens our Faith

As we consider the lilies, we also need to consider the power of our almighty Creator. He holds everything together, live outside time and space, and understand our deepest emotions.

He cares for us, loves us, and wants the best for us.

When we truly consider His power, His creation, and strength, we begin to worry a little less, love a little more, and praise a little more fervently.

Next time you’re feeling down about something, or wringing your hands with worry, I invite you to consider the lilies, the Great Creator of them, and His power to create, destroy, and give life.
