Aren’t five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten in God’s sight. Indeed, the hairs of your head are all counted. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows! (Luke 12: 6-7)
You Are Worth More Than Many Sparrows
The week before school began was full of busyness and energy, some good, some not so good. The weeks prior had become a distant blur filled with a funeral, physical therapy as a result of a major accident in our two-week old new car, and travel to far away places. Not realizing that the summer was now over, my family and I kicked into overdrive and quickly gathered the supplies needed for the first day of school. Last year, we were ready and waiting for school to begin. This year, not so much. The calm we felt before had been replaced with anxiety. Thankfully, we accomplished our goal without the loss of too much of our sanity.
God Can Provide in the Little Things
I received a call from a close sister-friend who was also in the throes of last minute back-to-school shopping. We chatted about costly Costco runs and giggled about Amazon Prime orders she hoped would arrive before the first day of school. There was a specific item on the list that was available in only one store the year before. A sense of urgency called her to return to the same store, but she felt she didn’t have time nor patience to make the trip. She prayed that if God wanted her to go, He would provide His precious daughter with choice (and convenience) parking directly in front of the store. If that wasn’t bold enough, she also prayed that the item would be strategically located at the door, waiting to be purchased. She hesitantly drove to the store, not knowing what to expect. Surely God wasn’t concerned about this small thing, right?
As my friend pulled up to the store, there were no parking spots available. As she moved closer to the entrance, out of the corner of her eye, she noticed that a car had backed out of its space – right in front of the store. She parked, ran into the store and grabbed the item, that happened to be placed by the door. In the checkout line, she received an additional and unexpected blessing – the item was nearly 50% off its listed price because she used a reward member number she forgot she had! The last time she shopped in the store was last year for the same item. Needless to say, she praised God all the way back to her car. My friend walked in obedience (although shakily at first) and prayed in faith, believing God heard her, no matter how seemingly insignificant the request.
In Luke 12:7, Jesus told His disciples that even sparrows, valued at pennies at that time, weren’t forgotten by God. He went on to tell them that the even the very hairs on their heads was numbered. That’s love! Friends, be encouraged, you are worth more than many sparrows to our Heavenly Father! There is nothing impossible for Him. Just like He takes care of the sparrows and took good care of my friend, God will take care of you.
