Many years ago, I was visiting a church friend for dinner. They had several families over for dinner that day. It is what we call a potluck. After eating my heart out, I started to break out in whelps. My body started hurting all over. My friend’s mom was not sure what I had eaten, so she called my mother. My mom had no knowledge of any allergies. She told her to give me some allergy medication.
Two weeks later, I was at a church function and I had another episode. This time, my mother was there and once again, I ran down the list of what I had eaten. What I had eaten are things I had always eaten. After that episode, my mother decided to send me to an allergist.
I had my appointment and the doctor set up a new appointment so that I could go through a battery of test. I was going away to boarding school a few days later, so my mom made my second test date during my home leave.
When I arrived at my boarding school, I went to breakfast and they had fruit and oatmeal. I am not a fan of oatmeal, so I decided that I just wanted some pineapple, nothing else.
After about 10 minutes of eating the pineapple, I began to break out in a rash. Then my throat started feeling funny. I ran to the nurse. She gave me a shot and called my parents. They took me to the local hospital.
I had single handedly discovered I was allergic to pineapple. My mother canceled my follow up appointment because she realized I had been drinking the juice of pineapples for months with punch.
As humans, we are allergic to many different things. However, we do not seem to be allergic to sin. We seem to be having a love affair with sin. We realize that it is killing us and we do not seem to care. I had to give up pineapple. It is not that I do not like pineapple, in fact, I love it. However, it does not love me. Satan uses things we love to entice us to sin. He uses these things to keep our focus away from God.
I had to give up pineapple because it was not good for me. I also decided to refocus my life and give up the amount of news, television and distractions in my life. Because it was not good for me either. Will I stay aware? Yes of course. I do not want my focus to be on this world but Heaven. I no longer feel the need to be so connected.
I am enjoying this time with God. I also look forward to eating pineapple again in heaven. Lesson learned
By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter; Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward. – Hebrews 11:24-26 KJV
