Daily Devotion – First Loves

Lessons in love

“We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed.” 2 Corinthians 4:8-9

Do you recall your first love? Well I remember all of my first loves. I was young and naive and I thought all of them were my first loves. I had no idea most of them wouldn’t last more than ninety days.

When you’re young, you don’t believe that life will be any different five years from now. And you think the person you’re with is going to last forever. I’ve had my fair share of forever’s. But in all of my youth there was only one boy that I told “Please don’t call me until you’re dead.”

The boy caused immeasurable pain at the time, at least that’s how I felt in that moment. He lied, he cheated and in the end I took him to the Airport and told him not to call me until his funeral. In my mind he’s still dead. Although I’m told he’s living in Delaware. I had to forgive him for what he did to me because I realized I was never supposed to be with him in the first place.

I’m sure God in his infinite mercy saw this situation and decided since I never asked his opinion of the boy that I probably needed a lesson in true love; Beautiful lesson. God delivered me from the boy and in the process I learned a great deal.

I learned to take all my relationships before God. See, when we live and act outside God’s will for our lives we put our lives in our own hands and not in His hands. In hindsight I’m just glad I survived with no permanent damage. He granted me mercy despite my stupidity. But one good thing that came out of this foolishness….I didn’t need to learn this lesson twice. I got it the first time.

From that day forward I learned to always take my loves before God. When you go into a relationship with God first you establish the a lifetime friendship. He won’t ever fail you. You can always trust him.

Trust that He will never lead you wrong. All you have to do is listen.

Our reminder text today is;

“We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed.” 2 Corinthians 4:8-9
