Daily Devotion – A Joyful Shout

Restoring our Joy

"Make a joyful shout to the LORD, all you lands." Psalm 100:1

It seems to be without fail that as one walks with the Lord, we, at some point, slip into a spiritual drudgery, of which requires a miraculous escape. It happens rather slowly. When we first get saved, we have this new found relationship with Christ that is overwhelmingly joyful. We are a new creation, and as such we see the world in a fresh and exciting way. The re-invigoration we feel is far greater than a jump into frigid water could ever produce.

Time, however, is the slowest moving thief in history. Lazily and stealthily, the spiritual anesthetic sets in; we begin to feel less; our motivation wanes; our devotion begins to erode. One day, whether we realize it or not, our joy has been sucked from our lives. This relationship with Christ has become a religion about Christ. Our labors for Christ have become laborious. Our time in prayer and the Word has become an inconvenience.

How do we arise from this spiritual slumber? How do we disengage from this drudgery? To be simple, we do so by making a joyful noise! To gladly and verbally acknowledge all that we are thankful for. To shout praises to God for all He has done. In short, to gratefully return to the beginning, to remember and reclaim the exhilaration that we felt when we first began to walk with Christ. To humbly stand at the foot of the cross and cry out shouts of joy for everything He has sacrificed and prepared for us.
