When a person asks Jesus into his heart, the Holy Spirit comes to live within him. Changes take place and the Spirit begins to move you and guide you. You find yourself stepping further away from the former you and turning into this new creation.
Who is the Holy Spirit?
Most of us know of the Trinity – the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, or Holy Ghost as it is sometimes called. We know the role of the Father, God and Creator of this universe, the Son, Jesus Christ, who was sent by the Father into this world to free us all from sin and death, but what exactly is the role of the Spirit?
In John 14, Jesus called Him the Advocate, the Spirit of Truth. He promised that upon His ascension into heaven, the Father would send this comfort to anyone who loves Him and obeys His teaching. This Spirit would guide us to live more Christlike lives. He is that voice you sometimes hear within yourself. It can be difficult, initially, learning to discern between His voice, your own thoughts, and even thoughts brought into your mind by the adversary. One way is to remember that Jesus Christ called Him the Spirit of truth…..He IS God!
As confusing as this tends to be, they are all equal parts of one whole, one God in three persons. This Spirit will never tell you to do something that would go against the Father. When you come to the Father, don’t try to hide anything from Him (what could you possibly hide from the one who knows all?) and don’t think that you must perfect yourself before you come to him. Just come as you are. Lay it all out before him and ask , not only for forgiveness of your sins, but ask Him also to help you become who you were always intended to be. As you grow closer to Christ and stronger in your faith, this discernment will become easier.
“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come. The old is gone and the new is here.” 2 Corinthians 5:17
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the holy spirit.” Romans 15:13
