He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. 1 John 4:8 KJV
This school year I took a job at a Christian k-8 school, as the principal and English teacher. My responsibilities come with the task of teaching the bible. I have been a public school teacher for over fifteen years. This is my first time teaching the bible.
During the first weeks of school, we focused on the creation story. We spoke at length about the war in heaven and how God had a plan for salvation.
Why Does God Care for Us
I explained to my class that the plan of salvation was planned before Adam and Eve sinned. One of my students who really doesn’t attend church raised her hand and asked me “Why did God care so much for the human race?”.
I laughed at her question because I have often wondered the very same thing. Why does God care about us so much?
The bible clearly has evidence of God’s love for us. In Genesis, He washed the entire earth with water, but He had Noah preaching the warnings for 120 years. In Exodus, He delivered the children of Israel out of bondage and through the red sea. And throughout biblical history, He has shown that His love for us is never-ending. Yet, we still test His love even today.
The Profound Answer in 1 John 4:8
This profound question finds its answer in the very nature of God Himself. First John 4:8 teaches that “God is love.” Not only does God love; love is part of His essential nature. Love is who God is. He has shown us in many ways that His love for us will never change, even when we change.
I challenge each of us today to remember that not only is God love, but he shows us every day in many ways that His love never fails. Lesson learned.
